Ingredients

For the Dough
  • 1 to 3 cups all-purpose flour – Sift for a lighter texture.
  • 1/4 cup sugar – Use granulated for sweetness.
  • 2 teaspoons instant yeast – No need to bloom; you can mix it directly.
  • 1 teaspoon salt – Enhances flavors; don’t skip it!
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon – Adds warmth and spice.
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg – Use fresh for the best flavor.
  • 1 cup milk, warmed – Ideal for activating the yeast.
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted – For richness and moisture.
  • 1 large egg – Helps bind the dough.
  • 1 cup mixed dried fruit (e.g., currants, raisins) – Choose your favorites!
  • 1/4 cup candied citrus peel – Adds a zesty twist.
For the Glaze
  • 1/4 cup water – To create a shiny finish.

Notes

These Hot Cross Buns are best enjoyed warm. Serve them plain or with butter, or pair them with a warm beverage, fruit salad, or yogurt. Optionally, drizzle with honey or serve with whipped cream. Ensure your yeast is fresh for best results, and letting the dough rise slowly in the fridge overnight can enhance flavor.
